A new lightning alert system has been installed on the Science and Technology Campus to provide weather warnings to students, employees, and visitors who are outdoors.
When lightning is detected within 10 miles of campus, a 15-second siren will sound. Thirty minutes after the last lightning strike within a 10-mile radius, three five-second siren bursts will signal that it is safe to resume outdoor activities.
The speakers for the lightning alert system are located on the roofs of Beacon Hall and Katherine Johnson Hall and are designed to be heard throughout campus. The lightning alert system will operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
You can also sign up to receive text alerts when lightening occurs close to George Mason University campuses. Visit alert.gmu.edu/lightning for more information.
