Construction work to connect Van Metre Hall and Fuse at Mason Square

Contractors will start to build interior connections between Van Metre Hall and Fuse at Mason Square on Tuesday, Aug. 13. The buildings will connect in two places on the first floor of Van Metre Hall (near the Multipurpose Room/Auditorium, and in the rear of the building near the classrooms), and on the second floor of Van Metre, near the University Life suite. This work will continue for 3–4 weeks, and building occupants may hear construction noise.

Fuse is still an active construction site, and access is restricted to authorized personnel only. Contact arlops@gmu.edu with questions.

Road Work on Fairfax Drive

Contractors will complete paving on Fairfax Drive near Mason Square starting Tuesday, Aug. 13. This work will include temporary lane closures (including bike lanes), parking closures, and new traffic patterns for the next two weeks. Contact arlops@gmu.edu with questions.

Construction work for Fuse at Mason Square will require core drilling in the Van Metre Garage on Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2. A section of sidewalk and the ramp between Mason Square Plaza and Fairfax Drive is closed for repairs through Wednesday, June 26. An accessible pathway from the sidewalk along Fairfax Drive to Van Metre Hall and Hazel Hall is available via the ramp in front of Hazel Hall.

George Mason University Spring Commencement will take place on Thursday, May 9, at 10 a.m. in EagleBank Arena on the Fairfax Campus. Separate Degree Celebrations will honor school and college graduates from Thursday, May 9, through Saturday, May 11, at the Fairfax Campus and Mason Square. Expect heavy traffic on and around campus. Multiple ceremonies will occur each day at the Fairfax Campus.

Noise from Construction at Van Metre and Vernon Smith Halls

Contractors will complete concrete drilling on the basement level of the Van Metre Garage on Wednesday, April 3, 7 a.m. to noon. Building occupants may experience loud noise during this work. For questions, contact arlops@gmu.edu.

Contractors will complete work on the rear façade of Vernon Smith Hall during the weeks of April 8 and April 15. Work will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. There will be intermittent drilling noise and vibration throughout the building. For questions, contact Lincoln Properties at 703-351-0000.

Traffic Advisory: Lane and Sidewalk Closures on Fairfax Drive

Lane closures will be in effect on Fairfax Drive between Kenmore and Kansas streets starting Friday, April 5, at 10 p.m. Two-way traffic will be diverted to the westbound lanes, with one lane open in each direction. The bike lane will be closed, and pedestrians will need to use the sidewalk on the south side of Fairfax Drive. These closures are expected to be in effect for approximately two weeks. Road Closure on Founders Way North: Friday, Jan. 26, through Monday, Jan. 29
A reminder that Founders Way North will be closed between the Van Metre Garage entrance and the west entrance to Vernon Smith Garage from Friday, Jan. 26, through Monday, Jan. 29. This section of roadway will be closed while a tower crane is removed from the construction site for Fuse at Mason Square.

Garage access will remain available. Vehicles accessing Vernon Smith Garage should approach the entrance from Washington Boulevard (near Giant). Vehicles accessing Van Metre Garage must enter Founders Way North from Kirkwood Road during the road closures. The section of Founders Way North directly behind the Fuse construction site will be fenced off through the summer, but the road will be open to vehicle traffic.

Traffic Impacts on Fairfax Drive: Saturday, Jan. 27
Traffic impacts are also expected on Fairfax Drive on Saturday, Jan. 27, while Dominion Virginia Power completes work between Kenmore and Kansas streets. This area should be avoided, if possible.

Sidewalk Closure on Fairfax Drive: Saturday, Feb. 3
The sidewalk on Fairfax Drive in front of Van Metre Hall will be closed all day on Saturday, Feb. 3, while materials are installed for the plaza renovations.

Updated Jan. 12: Due to weather conditions, the road closure previously scheduled for Jan. 12–15 on Founders Way North has been rescheduled.

Founders Way North will be closed between the Van Metre Garage entrance and the west entrance to Vernon Smith Garage from Friday, Jan. 26, through Monday, Jan. 29. This section of roadway will be closed while a tower crane is removed from the construction site for Fuse at Mason Square.

Landscaping work is underway on the plaza at Mason Square through Friday, Nov. 17. Contractors are using the accessible ramp in front of Hazel Hall to move materials during this process. The ramp remains open to the public during this time. Another accessible pathway to the building entrances is available on the west side of the plaza.
