Heavy traffic is expected on and around George Mason University’s Fairfax Campus for regional community college and high school graduation ceremonies at EagleBank Arena from May 12 through June 16, 2025.

Northern Virginia Community College's Commencement will take place at EagleBank Arena on Monday, May 12, at 11 a.m.

George Mason University Commencement and Degree Celebrations will take place on the Fairfax Campus from May 14–17. Get the details.

High school graduation ceremonies start at EagleBank Arena on Tuesday, May 27, and continue through Monday, June 16. EagleBank Arena will host up to three ceremonies each day, so traffic may be entering and exiting campus from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. Please allow extra travel time on and around campus.

George Mason faculty, staff, and students are advised to use the general permit area of the Rappahannock Parking Deck or the Field House parking lots to avoid delays. Shenandoah Parking Deck (levels 4 and 5) will be open for limited overflow student, employee, and event parking on weekdays when graduations occur.

George Mason University Spring Commencement will take place on Thursday, May 15, at 9:30 a.m. in EagleBank Arena on the Fairfax Campus. Separate Degree Celebrations will honor school and college graduates from Wednesday, May 14, through Saturday, May 17, at the Fairfax Campus.

Expect heavy traffic on and around campus. Multiple ceremonies will occur each day at the Fairfax Campus.

Note: Northern Virginia Community College's commencement will take place at EagleBank Arena on Monday, May 12, at 11 a.m. Regional high school graduations will take place at EagleBank Arena from May 27 to June 16. Read more.

George Mason University will celebrate Mason Day on Friday, April 25, from 3–10 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus. The event will feature a carnival with rides, games, treats, food trucks, inflatables, novelties, and performances. Admission is free for students, faculty, and staff with a valid George Mason ID. Guest tickets are available at the EagleBank Arena box office.

The event will take place from 3–10 p.m. in Parking Lots L and A near EagleBank Arena. Plan your trip with shopMason’s guide to Mason Day.

Parking and Traffic Advisory
Expect increased traffic on and around the Fairfax Campus. Lot L will be closed from Sunday, April 20, at 11 p.m. through Sunday, April 27. The western side of Lot A will be closed starting on Tuesday, April 22, at 1 p.m., and will reopen Sunday, April 27. Po River Lane between Roanoke River Road and Lot A will be closed on Friday, April 25.

Signage has been posted in affected areas. Any vehicles left in Lot L after 11 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, will be relocated at the owner’s risk and expense. If you have purchased a daily, weekly, or monthly Lot L and K permit, please park in Lot K during this time. Get more details from Parking and Transportation.

Contractors will complete necessary tree pruning and removals around the Fairfax Campus from Monday, March 10, to Friday, March 14, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Crews will move to various areas around the campus, including:

Patriot Circle
Shenandoah River Lane
Rivanna River Way
Student Union Building I (SUB I)
Lot P
Liberty Square

The loading dock at the Johnson Center will be closed on Friday, March 7, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. to facilitate the delivery of equipment by crane. The crane will provide support for the replacement of air handler units on the roof of the Johnson Center.

Parking spaces at the loading dock will be closed. Pedestrian traffic will be redirected away from the loading dock area, toward Innovation Hall.

Renovation projects in the atriums of Buchanan Hall and Horizon Hall will start on Friday, Dec. 20. While work is underway in these buildings, temporary barriers will be in place around active work zones on each floor. Overhead protection will be installed in areas below work zones. Furniture in some common areas will be temporarily relocated outside of work zones.

Buchanan Hall: The project will continue until approximately Jan. 13, 2025, and will include the installation of additional guard rails on the second floor.

Horizon Hall: The project will continue until early March 2025 and will include the installation of additional guard rails and awnings on floors 3–6.

Johnson Center: This project was originally scheduled to begin Friday, Dec. 20, but has been postponed. A new start date will be announced when determined. The project will include the installation of additional guard rails on floors 2–4. The two atrium staircases will be closed while the work is completed.

Increased traffic is expected on and around the Fairfax Campus due to events at EagleBank Arena on the evenings of Wednesday, Nov. 20, and Thursday, Nov. 21. On Wednesday, the George Mason men’s basketball game starts at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m. On Thursday, a concert starts at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m.

Drivers should allow additional travel time to and from campus and avoid the southern end of campus near EagleBank Arena and Braddock Road. Extra time should be allowed if using Mason Shuttles.

Levels 4 and 5 of the Shenandoah Parking Deck will be open to General parking permits and event parking starting at 4 p.m. Vehicles should enter the Shenandoah Deck at the Level 3 permit entrance. All General permit holders and event attendees should exit the Shenandoah Deck by 11 p.m.

Those wishing to avoid arena parking and traffic impacts on the Fairfax Campus should consider parking in the Rappahannock Parking Deck on the north end of campus and use University Drive and Roberts Road for access.
